SMU Announces Hiring of Karl Lynch as Head Coach

Aug. 29, 2011

Dallas, TX – Guiding the Southern Methodist University Mustangs in the 2011-12 campaign will be Head Coach Karl Lynch , Defensive Coordinator Jason Gildea and Assistant Coach Corbin Embrey .

While many recognize Karl Lynch as the King of Content with MCLA The Lax Mag, few know that he has been coaching in the MCLA since 1993. With coaching tours at Arizona State University, Trinity University and the University of North Texas, Coach Lynch is very familiar with the MCLA landscape. In 2009, he was named the LSA Coach of the Year after leading the Mean Green to its first ever conference championship game. He also served as the Lone Star Alliance conference director for several years.

“We’ve spent the last five years going against each other on the sideline, and I’ve always admired the job Karl did at North Texas,” said former Head Coach Tom Greene.  “His teams always played tough, got up and down the field, and worked hard for him.  On top of that, he’s been extremely important to the growth of the MCLA over the last ten years with his role as commissioner and now with the magazine.  As an SMU alum and former coach, I couldn’t be happier to hand Karl the keys to the program.”

Jason Gildea returns for his second season as the Mustangs Defensive Coordinator. A two sport athlete at Roanoke College, Jason captained both the lacrosse and soccer teams. Locally, he founded the Frisco Lacrosse Association.

“SMU is coming off a season that showed one of its strongest defensive units to date.  I am pleased to return and help guide a group of young successful athletes with the sight on the LSA Championship once again,” commented Coach Gildea.  “We look to grow even stronger in the back as we add some young defensive talent to the squad this year.”

In between flights to Malaysia, Corbin Embrey will be assisting the Mustangs this year working primarily with the offense. A versatile midfielder, Corbin played under Coach Lynch at the University of North Texas where he received All-LSA honors his junior and senior seasons.

“We are very fortunate to have Corbin on the coaching staff,” said Coach Lynch. “He is looking forward to helping the young players develop and contribute to the team’s success. It’s an added benefit that he acted as a team president while in school and should help the executive board navigate through the MCLA.”
